Thinly Veiled
Thinly Veiled is a solo show by Lindsay Gwinn Parker composed of paintings which all explore the state of existing within violent throes of duality. Each subject vacillates between the chaos of life as it is and an interior narrative that has been contrived to yield solace or some semblance of order.
Blurred figures and polished faces weave a tapestry of pleasant illusions to shroud their bitter reality. Unmet gazes drown in a churning sea of neon as hair melts in the wind. Glowing pastels crash against clenched jaws and smeared lacquer, obscuring a vile truth with the fragile gossamer of myth.
Radiant clusters of flesh boast a smooth patina designed to conceal the coarse edges of some insatiable void. Fleeting moments of manic bliss shine bright against the ominous shadow of grief lurking in the distance.
Frowning eyes and crooked grins promote a soft veneer of virtue that hides the rot within. This grotesque orgy of daydreamers howls into space, perpetuating a charade they’ll never have the desire, nor the option to escape.
About the artistIn my work, I strive toward conveying the experience of time passing and the effect it has on individuals and their environment; the obvious impermanence of everything that we so often choose to ignore.
With each piece, I focus on the absurdity of a moment that has been stripped of context or suspended between impressions of the past and intimations of the future; a moment that has no meaning outside of that which is projected onto it.
Much of my recent work alludes to the malleability of self; the disparity between our interior lives and the curated images that we outwardly project to please others. Though I occasionally use watercolor on paper, I’ve found that the versatility of acrylic paint on canvas allows me to achieve visual effects like blurring and transparency while still being able to create defined layers of detail, if desired.
When painting, I often focus more on the saturation or contrast of colors, rather than on the specific traits of identifiable forms and locations. I’m most inspired by scenes and subjects that are in a general state of
flux or transition; dawn, dusk, passing storms, or people in motion.
