Tell Him What We Said …
Tell Him What We Said About “Paint It Black”
OPENS JULY 7, RECEPTION FROM 6-9PM
ON DISPLAY THROUGH JULY 28
This show takes its title from a line in the Big Star song “Thirteen”: won’t you tell your dad get off my back / tell him what we said ‘bout “Paint It Black.“ The curator, Andy Mister, always felt like that those lines encapsulate the insular world of adolescence, how as a teenager one uses popular culture to create an identity, and the resulting generational gap, as ones parents become more and more outside that personal world of pop culture. For Mister, looking back at his emotional life as a teenager, it seems to be as wrapped up in movies, music and book as the real world in which he lived. But maybe this isn’t the case for everyone. Working on this show, Mister has seen how other artists view this period of development and how it differs from his own conception. For this show Mister has asked artists whose work either speaks directly to the state of adolescence or who have maintained that sense of freedom and rebellion.
